( As on 22/05/2018 14:31) Markets trade in the green, SBI rises despite posting big loss in Q4

The markets pared their morning gains and are now trading slightly higher on Tuesday post-afternoon amid weakness in their Asian counterparts.



In the global markets, Asian shares skidded on Tuesday as a strong dollar sapped demand for emerging market assets while surging oil prices stoked concerns about a flare-up in inflation and faster US interest rate increases.



Japan's Nikkei was mostly flat while Australian shares fell 0.9 per cent. Chinese shares opened in the red with the blue-chip CSI300 off 0.7 per cent.



European markets are mixed. The FTSE 100 is higher by 0.09%, while the CAC 40 is leading the DAX lower. They are down 0.13% and 0.12% respectively.



Back home, SBI reported a big loss of Rs 7,718 crore for the quarter ended March 2018. Asset quality weakened further as gross non-performing assets were higher at 10.91 percent from 10.35 percent QoQ and net NPA rose 5.73 percent against 5.61 percent QoQ.



At 14:11 hours, BSE SENSEX was at 34679.61 up by 63.48 points or by 0.18 % and then NSE Nifty was at 10533.8 up by 17.1 points or by 0.16 %.



The BSE Sensex touched intraday high of 34754.6 and intraday low of 34550.22. The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 10558.6 and intraday low of 10490.55.



The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were State Bank of India (Rs. 258.00,+5.26%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 308.35,+3.98%), Bajaj Auto Ltd. (Rs. 2816.00,+3.53%), Coal India Ltd. (Rs. 277.60,+2.91%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 178.85,+2.11%), among others.



The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone Ltd. (Rs. 378.80,-1.30%), Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (Rs. 3513.95,-1.24%), Asian Paints Ltd. (Rs. 1285.15,-1.14%), ITC Ltd. (Rs. 279.35,-0.97%), Housing Development Finance Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 1804.90,-0.84%), among others.



The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was strong. On BSE out of total shares traded 2772, shares advanced were 1421 while 1209 shares declined and 142 were unchanged.
