GIFT Nifty trades through the night while Indian markets are closed. By 9:15 AM IST it has already reacted to US market closes, Asian market moves, and overnight global news. Here is how to interpret the number:
| GIFT Nifty vs Yesterday's Nifty 50 Close | Signal | Typical Behaviour |
|---|---|---|
| ▲ Higher (positive difference) | Gap-up opening likely | Global positive sentiment. Nifty 50 may open above previous close. |
| ▼ Lower (negative difference) | Gap-down opening likely | Global negative pressure. Nifty 50 may open below previous close. |
| ≈ Roughly similar | Flat opening likely | Muted global cues. Domestic news and FII flows will drive direction. |
GIFT Nifty is a directional indicator — not a guarantee. RBI decisions, FII flows, and domestic news can override any pre-market signal once Indian markets open.
GIFT Nifty is a futures contract that tracks India's Nifty 50 — the benchmark index of the top 50 NSE-listed companies. Unlike the Nifty 50, which trades only from 9:15 AM to 3:30 PM IST, GIFT Nifty trades approximately 21 hours a day on NSE International Exchange (NSE IX) in GIFT City, Gandhinagar.
Before July 2023, this contract was called SGX Nifty and traded on Singapore Exchange. The transition brought international Nifty trading within India's regulatory jurisdiction. Read the full SGX to GIFT Nifty transition story →
