Triveni Turbine Ltd - Margins stumble; exports accelerate; H2 recovery remains | Q1FY27 Company update
Triveni Turbine delivered a resilient Q1FY27 performance, with topline growth comfortably ahead of estimates despite near-term margin dislocation from adverse order mix, strategic low-margin execution and deferred export dispatches amid elevated freight costs. Order momentum remained encouraging, driven by exports and aftermarket, while the order book expanded 5.1% YoY to Rs 21.8bn. Although domestic inquiries remain subdued, robust international traction coupled with accelerating aftermarket opportunities, strengthens the medium-term growth runway. We remain constructive on Triveni’s positioning in the global energy-efficiency, distributed-power and decarbonization ecosystem, with H2FY27E margin recovery and execution emerging as key catalysts.
Triveni Turbine Ltd. Stock Price Chart
Healthy topline; margin trough likely near:
Revenue grew 19.2% YoY to Rs 4.4bn, 6.5% ahead of our estimates, led by 27.4% YoY domestic growth and 10.9% export growth. EBITDA declined 30.3% YoY to Rs 513mn, with margin contracting to 11.6% from 19.8% in Q1FY26, while PAT fell 20.7% YoY to Rs 511mn. Margin compression reflected the adverse H1FY26 order mix, strategic-order phasing, higher domestic execution and deferred exports. We expect Q2FY27E margins to remain volatile, but believe the earnings to bottom out in H1, with improving mix and execution supporting a sharper recovery from Q3FY27E.
Export and aftermarket momentum enhances order visibility:
Q1FY27 order inflow increased 6.1% YoY to Rs 5.68bn, with exports and aftermarket both surging 53% YoY, partly offset by 35% and 12% declines in domestic and product orders, respectively. Closing order book rose 5.1% YoY to Rs 21.8bn, with exports contributing 57%. Aftermarket orders jumped 115% YoY to Rs 6.2bn, now constituting 29% of the backlog. The rising export and aftermarket mix is structurally positive for both growth and margins; we see this as an important earnings-quality upgrade despite softer domestic ordering.
International inquiries remain encouraging; conversion key:
Domestic inquiries remain muted, with customers adopting a wait-and-watch approach and inquiry-to-order cycles extending 6–12 months. International markets, particularly the US and Southeast Asia, continue to show stronger inquiry momentum. US data-centre opportunities remain noteworthy as 4–5-year gas-turbine lead times drive interest in conventional combined-cycle solutions, though conversion remains >12 months. While international inquiries are encouraging, we remain cautious on near-term revenue contribution as these are yet to translate into meaningful orders. Sustained inquiry momentum and conversion into firm orders remain key to validating the opportunity.
Valuation, view & Key risks:
We modestly raise FY27E/FY28E revenue estimates by 4.3% each to reflect stronger Q1 execution and backlog visibility but cut EBITDA estimates by 16.7%/1.0% to factor in elevated COGS and lower margins. Consequently, FY27E/FY28E PAT estimates decline 15.8%/3.9%. We maintain ACCUMULATE with a TP of Rs 692, as we believe near-term earnings weakness is largely execution/mix-led and does not alter the company’s attractive structural growth trajectory. Our attributed valuation multiple remained unchanged at 45.0x P/E and 35.0x EV/EBITDA on June 2028E estimates. Key risks: Prolonged margin compression, delayed project execution, and weak global industrial demand.
