La Opala RG - Cautiously optimistic | Q1FY27 Company Update
La Opala RG reported a better-than-anticipated Q1FY27 performance, with revenue growth returning to high single digits after an extended period of subdued demand, albeit aided by a favourable base. The recovery was largely driven by the domestic business, with improvement visible across channels. In the traditional trade channel, the dealer rationalisation programme appears to be yielding initial benefits, while modern retail witnessed a modest uptick, barring softness from one large customer. E-commerce growth also accelerated, supported by renewed focus and improved traction on the channel. Management remains confident of sustaining the recovery over the coming quarters, supported by improving domestic demand and an expected gradual revival in exports. While the quarter marks an encouraging start to FY27, we remain cautiously optimistic and would look for sustained growth over the next few quarters before turning more constructive. We maintain our BUY rating with a revised target price of Rs 245, as we roll forward our valuation to Q1FY29E, with the current market price appearing to factor in most of the near-term negatives.
La Opala RG ltd. Stock Price Chart
Revenue – Volume-led recovery despite elevated discounting:
La Opala reported revenue growth of 9.3% YoY to Rs 714mn (MNCL Est- Rs 698mn), with most of the growth driven by higher volumes, while discounting remained elevated across channels. Domestic sales remained the key growth driver, supported by improving traction in traditional trade, modern retail and e-commerce, while exports remained broadly flat YoY.
Increase in power costs weighs margins:
The company reported gross margin of 90.9% versus 93.0% YoY, while OPM contracted by 64bps YoY to 36.3%. Lower gross margins, coupled with higher power costs (+92bps YoY), weighed on profitability; however, lower employee expenses (-145bps YoY) and other expenses (-90bps YoY) helped contain the overall margin decline. We believe power costs are likely to remain elevated in the near term, as the company is currently operating only two of its three furnaces and overall capacity utilization remains sub-optimal, limiting operating efficiencies. EBITDA grew 7.5% YoY to Rs 259mn, while PAT increased 3.3% YoY to Rs 262mn.
Outlook – Recovery encouraging; competitive dynamics turning favourable:
We remain cautiously optimistic on La Opala’s near-term outlook, supported by improving domestic demand, renewed focus on e-commerce and better traction in traditional trade. Management also expects exports to recover gradually, aided by improving container availability and easing logistics constraints. Competitive intensity could moderate as some industry peers face capacity constraints, potentially supporting incremental volume gains for La Opala. The company is currently operating at ~70% utilisation with two of its three furnaces operational, while the third furnace is expected to restart next year, providing additional capacity and improving operating efficiencies. We would look for sustained topline growth and better utilisation over the next few quarters before turning more constructive.
Valuation and Risk – Attractive risk-reward at current valuations:
We expect La Opala to deliver Revenue/EBITDA/PAT CAGR of 13%/15%/17% over FY26–FY29E, supported by a recovery in domestic demand, improving channel traction and operating leverage. We largely maintain our earnings estimates and roll forward our valuation to Q1FY29E. We value the stock at 20x Q1FY29E EPS, arriving at a revised target price of Rs 245 (from Rs 225). At current valuations, we believe the risk-reward remains favourable, particularly as earnings growth normalises from a subdued base. Key risks include a slowdown in consumer sentiment, higher-than-expected competitive intensity and slower-than-anticipated recovery in demand.
