Hindustan Unilever - Volume-Led Recovery Continues; Cost Inflation Remains a Key Watchpoint | Initiating Coverage

HUVR reported ~10% revenue growth led by an equal contribution from UVG (5% growth) and price. Further, growth was supported by double-digit growth in home care and beauty and wellbeing segments. Management expects stable FMCG demand with volume-led growth in FY27E, supported by portfolio and channel transformation, while closely monitoring monsoon and geopolitical risks. GM and EBITDAM contracted to 48.4% and 22.6%, respectively, in line with the management's guided EBITDAM range of 22.5–23.5%. The management expects input cost inflation to remain firm sequentially (2-5%). During the quarter, the company implemented mere ~5% price hikes against input cost inflation of ~10%. Nevertheless, HUVR reiterated its EBITDAM guidance of 22.5 to 23.5%. We believe HUVR is well positioned to deliver sustainable volume-led growth, driven by structural changes, premiumization and channel transformation. Continued focus on operating efficiencies is expected to support the company in maintaining its EBITDAM guidance. However, near-term volatility in commodity prices remains a key monitorable. Following the recent correction in the stock price, we initiate coverage on Hindustan Unilever with a 'Buy' rating. Valuing the stock at 45x FY28E EPS, we arrive at a target price of Rs. 2,467.
Q1FY27 Performance:
Revenue and APAT in line, while EBITDA below consensus estimates: Net sales stood at Rs 166.6bn grew by 9.8% YoY, highest growth in the past 12 quarters. The UVG on consol basis was 5.0%. GM contracted by 100bps YoY to 48.4%. A 100/10bps increase in RM/other exp was partially offset by 80bps decline in ad expenses. Consequently, EBITDAM contracted by 30bps YoY to 22.6%. EBITDA grew by 8.3% YoY to Rs 37.7bn. RPAT de-grew by 3.7% YoY to Rs 26.3bn. Excluding extraordinary items, APAT de-grew by 4.4% YoY to Rs 27.1bn.
Segmental Performance:
- Home Care reported 13.4% YoY sales growth, driven by high-single-digit UVG, while EBIT margin contracted 230bps YoY to 16.6%.
- Beauty & Wellbeing delivered 11.1% YoY revenue growth, supported by high-single-digit UVG, with EBIT margin expanding 80bps YoY to 30.0%.
- Personal Care recorded 3.3% YoY revenue growth, led by strong performance in Premium Bars and continued market leadership in Bodywash, while EBIT margin improved 100bps YoY to 19.5%.
- Food & Refreshment posted 6.8% YoY sales growth, driven by mid-single-digit UVG, with EBIT margin expanding 120bps YoY to 19.9%.
Outlook:
We expect HUVR to sustain healthy volume-led growth, supported by continued investments in brand building, premiumization, innovation and expanding distribution across GT, MT and Q-com channels. While near-term GM may remain under pressure due to elevated input costs and commodity volatility, calibrated price hikes, a favorable product mix and operating leverage should help the company maintain its guided EBITDAM range of 22.5–23.5%. Further, portfolio transformation through premium brands such as Minimalist and OZiva, coupled with strong execution across high-growth categories, is expected to support steady earnings growth over the medium term.
Valuation:
We forecast Revenue/EBITDA/PAT CAGR of 10.0/10.2/9.2% over FY26-FY28E. HUVR remains a high-quality consumer staples company, supported by a strong brand portfolio, robust distribution, healthy cash generation and disciplined capital allocation. Its focus on volume-led growth, premiumization and channel expansion underpins long-term growth despite near-term margin pressures. Following the recent correction in the stock price, we initiate coverage on HUVR with a 'Buy' rating. Valuing the stock at 45x FY28E EPS, we arrive at a target price of Rs. 2,467.
