One of GIFT Nifty's most distinctive features — and one of the most misunderstood — is its trading schedule.
Unlike the Nifty 50, which trades only during NSE India's six-hour window, GIFT Nifty trades approximately 21 hours a day on NSE International Exchange (NSE IX). That means while most of India is asleep, global participants are actively trading the same contract that Indian traders will follow when they wake up.
Understanding the session structure — which hours are open, which are closed, and which carry the most information — is foundational knowledge for anyone who uses GIFT Nifty, whether as a trader or simply as a morning market indicator.
This article gives you the complete, current trading hours in both IST and GMT, a session-by-session breakdown, the pre-market window explained, and a guide to holidays and closures.
All timings are sourced from NSE International Exchange (NSE IX) and are subject to revision. Always verify the current schedule at nseix.com before placing any trade. This article is for educational purposes only and does not constitute investment advice.

To understand GIFT Nifty's schedule, it helps to see the entire 24-hour day in one view and map where each global market fits.
| Global Market | Open (IST) | Close (IST) | Why It Matters for GIFT Nifty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tokyo (Nikkei) | 5:30 AM | 2:30 PM | First major Asian read of global sentiment. Nikkei direction often correlates with GIFT Nifty early session move. |
| NSE India (Nifty 50) | 9:15 AM | 3:30 PM | Peak liquidity for GIFT Nifty. Tightest spreads. Cash market and futures move in tandem. |
| London (FTSE) | 1:30 PM | 10:00 PM | European session adds volume to GIFT Nifty in the post-Indian-market hours of Session 1. Risk sentiment from London often drives the 4–6 PM IST window. |
| Hong Kong (Hang Seng) | 6:45 AM | 3:30 PM | Key emerging market proxy. Moves in Hang Seng during India's pre-market window often precede similar directional moves in Indian equities. |
| New York (S&P 500 / Dow) | 7:00 PM | 1:30 AM (+1) | Most important session for next-day India signal. The US close drives GIFT Nifty's position during Session 2. Fed decisions, earnings surprises, and macro data released during US hours create the overnight gap that Indian traders read at 6:30 AM. |
Market hours are approximate and subject to seasonal daylight saving time changes. IST does not observe daylight saving time — GMT offsets for London and New York shift by 1 hour during daylight saving periods (roughly March–October). For informational purposes only.
Session 1 is the primary trading session. It spans 17 continuous hours and covers four distinct market phases — each with its own character, liquidity profile, and volatility pattern.
Asian Pre-Market Window
6:30 AM – 9:15 AM IST
The most important window for Indian traders. NSE India has not yet opened. GIFT Nifty is absorbing the US market close from the overnight Session 2, Asian market opens (Nikkei, Hang Seng), crude oil price, and USD/INR rate.
The difference between yesterday's Nifty 50 close and the current GIFT Nifty level during this window gives the implied opening gap. Most pre-market analysis is conducted here. Check today's pre-market signal →
Liquidity: Low-Medium · Spreads: Wider than Indian market hours · Volatility: Moderate (can spike on Asian data)
Indian Market Hours Overlap
9:15 AM – 3:30 PM IST
NSE India and NSE IX are both active. This is the highest-liquidity window for GIFT Nifty trading. Institutional participants are active on both exchanges simultaneously, keeping the GIFT Nifty price closely aligned with the Nifty 50 spot level with minimal basis.
For traders new to GIFT Nifty, this is the recommended session to start. Tightest spreads, highest volume, most transparent price discovery.
Liquidity: High · Spreads: Tightest of any session · Volatility: High at open (9:15 AM) and close (3:15–3:30 PM)
Post-India, European Session Active
3:30 PM – 8:00 PM IST
NSE India has closed. GIFT Nifty continues trading with European institutional participation. FTSE 100, DAX, and CAC 40 are active during this window. Risk-on or risk-off signals from Europe can cause meaningful moves in GIFT Nifty during these hours.
Liquidity: Medium · Spreads: Moderate · Volatility: Driven by European macro data and ECB signals
US Pre-Market Opens, Session 1 Closes
8:00 PM – 11:30 PM IST
US pre-market futures are active. US economic data releases (CPI, NFP, FOMC minutes) often fall during this window. GIFT Nifty can move sharply in response. Session 1 closes at 11:30 PM IST — positions held beyond this point roll into Session 2 automatically. Verify rollover mechanics with your broker.
Liquidity: Medium · Spreads: Moderate–wide · Volatility: High if US macro data is released
Session 2 covers peak US market hours. It is shorter than Session 1 but carries the most information for the next day's Indian market signal.
Why Session 2 Is Critical
Session 2 Risks to Note
The level at which GIFT Nifty closes Session 2 — or more accurately, where it is trading by 6:30 AM when Session 1 reopens — becomes the morning's pre-market signal that Indian traders read before NSE opens.
For new traders, Session 2 participation is not recommended until you are fully comfortable with GIFT Nifty's mechanics. The risk of large overnight gaps is real, and the lack of domestic liquidity can make exits more costly. Speak with a SEBI-registered adviser before trading overnight sessions.
GIFT Nifty does not trade continuously. There is a 2.5-hour gap between Session 2's close at 4:00 AM IST and Session 1's open at 6:30 AM IST.
During this window, NSE International Exchange is closed. No orders can be placed or modified. Any open positions are held at their current value until Session 1 reopens.
⏸ What Happens During the Gap (4:00 AM – 6:30 AM IST)
Of all the hours in GIFT Nifty's schedule, the window between 6:30 AM and 9:15 AM IST is the one most watched by Indian market participants — including those who never trade GIFT Nifty directly.
Here is why this window is uniquely informative:

GIFT Nifty does not trade on all Indian public holidays. NSE International Exchange (NSE IX) publishes its own annual holiday list, which may differ from the NSE India holiday list in some years.
Weekends — Always Closed
NSE IX does not trade on Saturdays or Sundays. This applies regardless of global market activity.
NSE IX Holiday List May Differ from NSE India
NSE IX publishes its own holiday calendar annually. Do not assume that every NSE India holiday is also an NSE IX holiday, or vice versa. Always verify the specific date at nseix.com before planning a trade around a holiday.
Settlement and Expiry Dates Near Holidays
Monthly expiry dates that fall on or near a holiday may be adjusted. Check the official NSE IX expiry calendar before holding any position near a known holiday period.
Where to Find the Official Holiday List
The authoritative source for NSE IX's annual holiday calendar is nseix.com. Your broker's trading platform will also typically display a warning when a trading day is a holiday. Verify both sources.
